Zirconia ceramic femoral heads are composed of dense tetragonal zirconia ceramics. By precisely controlling the content of the stabilizer yttria and the sintering aid alumina, and optimizing the green body shaping and sintering processes, a dense fine-grained structure with a grain size of approximately 0.2 microns and a density of 99.6% TD has been achieved.
Due to its extremely superior microstructure, the synergistic effect of phase transformation from tetragonal phase to monoclinic phase and fine crystal strengthening mechanism under external force have significantly improved the flexural strength and fracture toughness of zirconia ceramics. Among them, the fracture toughness reaches 12.5MPa.m1/2, and the four-point bending strength is anastonishing 1800MPa, which is twice the industry standard of 800MPa required.
The low-temperature sintering process not only creates a dense fine grained structure, but also gives zirconia cera-mics extraordinary resistance to hydr-othermal aging. According to industry standard IS013356,Treated in a hy-drothermal environment at 134°C and 0.2MPa for up to 40 hours,The monoc-linic phase content is only 4.1%.The static pressure crushing strength is as high as 9.0 tons (model 28L, Worst Ca-se), which is much higher than the 4.6 tons required by the FDA.

Zirconia ceramics have outstanding hydrophilicity. After implantation into the human body, body fluids will form a liquid film between the zirconia ceramic femoral head and the polyethylene acetabular liner. This significantly reduces the wear of the polyethylene acetabular liner, and thus extends the service life of the prosthesis. According to ISO14242-1, the wear amount per million times is only 6.52±1.07mg,as is comparable to the wear amount of the best ceramic femoral head currently available in the world.
